Bill Moseley 2015 Bowness Photography Prize finalist

It's just endless this month, the artists of Hill End are in full spring with finalists in the Portia Geach - Rosemary Valadon, Sculpture in the Garden - Genevieve Carroll and Hui Selwood and Bill Moseley selected for the prestigious Bowness Photography Prize at Monash Art Gallery Melbourne.

The Coalminers Daughter Wet Plate Collodion 8 x 10 Tin Type 2015

Photographer/master printmaker of Hill End Press, Bill Moseley was one of the 47 selected for his work The Coalminers Daughter, out of 2400 entries this prize. Excited... yes he was, this led to a trip down to Monash Art Gallery to shuffle and mix with other photographers on the opening night. Chatting to the eloquent photographer Bill Henson who was one of the judges for this years prize, was a high light of the night.

The MGA Foundation was established in 2005 with the aim of supporting Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) and its nationally significant collection of Australian photography. The Foundation's program of events and fundraising activities is managed by Trustees.

The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize was initiated by the MGA Foundation in 2006. Established to promote excellence in photography, the Bowness Photography Prize and exhibition provide an opportunity to view and to engage with some of the best of contemporary Australian photography. (notes from Monash Art Gallery website)

PORTIA GEACH finalist Hill End artist Rosemary Valadon

Rosemary Valadon - Dutiful Daughter Oil on canvas

"I have a work in the Portia Geach currently on exhibition at S.H. Ervin Gallery, Observatory Hill, Sydney.  It is a painting of friend and fellow artist Genevieve Carrol and her daughter Parris Dewhurst.  It is quite a small work for me, to add to the intimate nature of the subject – a grown up daughter taking over the arrangement of her mother’s hair". Rosemary Valadon

Rosemary Valadon is an award winning Australian artist (the Blake Religious Art Prize, Portia Geach Portrait Prize, Muswellbrook Art Prize, amongst others). She is a regular finalist in the Archibald, Sulman, Blake, Portia Geach and Mosman prizes. Her career spans 35 years, and survey Shows of her work were held at the Macquarie University Gallery and the Manning Regional Art Gallery, Taree, in 2006 and 2007.
Valadon is represented in major Australian collections including BHP Billiton, National Portrait Gallery, Uniting Church, Macquarie University Gallery, Bathurst and Muswellbrook Regional Galleries, Art Bank, and private collections in Australia and overseas.
Her interest in the ‘feminine’ and depictions of women throughout the ages has been a major focus of her work. This has been explored through the theatrical worlds of ancient mythologies, psychological theories, and fairy tales.

Rosemary currently has her artwork at the Jean Bellette Gallery Hill End in a group show From the studio - Artists of Hill End.
